Goal Rush

To qualify from the first Group round, England needed a win against next opponents Poland. On 11 June 1986, 23, 000 spectators packed into the stadium in Monterrey and witnessed Gary Lineker spring into life after 8 minutes of the match. Lineker drifted in front of his marker inside the six yard box to connect with a cross from Gary Stevens on the right wing and gave England the lead. Just 5 minutes later, Lineker scored his second. Steve Hodge crossed from the left wing and Lineker put the ball into the net on the half volley. Lineker got his hat-trick after 35 minutes from a mistake by the Polish goalkeeper. Trevor Steven’s corner went over the goalkeeper’s hands and fell to Lineker who gave England a 3-0 lead and a place in the second round. Lineker’s goals meant England qualified second in the Group on goal difference better than Poland.
